Take Action
The most important action that you can take to help win the race to save monk seals is to SPEAK UP! While the decline of the monk seal is dire, the message is hopeful! We know that our mitigation efforts are working! 20% of the current population is alive as a direct result of mitigation efforts. But we must continue these efforts if we are to save the Hawaiian monk seal from extinction. This is where we need your help!
Without the support of citizens like you, government officials will not prioritize funding and support of monk seal conservation including mitigation efforts and research. In 2011, the budget to fund these activities was cut by 35%. These budget cuts translate directly into an inability to rehabilitate sick and injured seals, relocate seals from islands where survival is poor, increase public awareness about threats to monk seals, and perform the science that is required to further understand why monk seals are declining.
We need you to SPEAK UP on behalf of monk seals and tell your friends, family, co-workers, and your government representative that we CAN save this species from extinction. We also need your help to send a positive message of support to the officials on the forefront of this race – the government officials in the state of Hawaii. Your support will help them keep fighting to save this species!
